Description:

Size/Shape The trunk develops a crooked, contorted shape with age which adds to the character of the tree. There are numerous pendant brittle branches. Can be kept as a container plant indoors in the cooler zones. The tree shape is interesting, the branches droop down and then swoop up at the ends. Elegant drooping branches.
Leaves Soft leathery oblong leaves. Alternate simple.
Flowers Produces greenish-yellow flowers with long drooping, twisted petals of soft leathery texture. The black avoids fruits have many black seeds. The 6-petalled flowers are difficult to see since they are a pale lime-green and tend to get overlooked. Its flowers are carried in mass clusters at the end of its elegant drooping branches. Each flower is a beautiful five-point star which begins as white, then green, then turning a rich, golden yellow as the blossoms mature.
Blooming Season Blooms repeatedly. Blooms when very young. Mature specimens are known to bloom almost continuously all year long. Blooms during the warmer months. Blooms when very young, often the 2nd or 3rd year.
Fragrance Known for the perfumed aroma of its blossoms. Intensely fragrant. The true Chanel No.5 perfume tree. A strong aromatic scent. Made world famous by Coco Chanel who in 1923 said upon introducing Chanel No.5 perfume in Paris, "I wanted a perfume that is composed - not hints of roses or lilies of the valley. A woman's perfume - redolent, evocative of a woman. A perfume unlike any other ever made. The ideal scent for a woman." An exotic, unmistakable scent.


Growing Info:

Propagation Plant as soon as received. Must have constant warmth with high humidity and bright light. Plant at a depth of 1/2" using soil mixture. Keep damp. Seeds or cuttings. Sow indoors before last frost. Unblemished fruit must be significantly overripe before harvesting seed. Clean and dry seeds. Seed does not store well; sow as soon as possible. By seed which can take a few months to germinate.
Soil Acidic to mildly acidic.
Water Damp. Moist. Wet, moist soil. High humidity.
Food Fertilize lightly every 2 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
Light Full sun. Full or partial sun.
Climate Must be kept warm. Zones 9b-11. It likes the heat. The branches are known to be brittle and break easily so protection from strong winds is recommended.
